Stretcher bars are wooden frame work on which a canvas of cotton or linen is mounted for artists to work on. One can make their own stretcher bars or buy pre cut ones from art stores. The stretcher bars provide the support to canvas otherwise it will sag once it is painted. For getting good painting results, the canvas should be stretched taut over the frame. There should be no creases or unnecessary pulls on the canvas after it has been properly stretched on a stretcher bar.
